Five Minute Friday: A Buzzing Fly
In England, for reasons I’m not completely aware, windows do not come with screens to keep out insects. So often in the summertime, when I’m sitting in my study by the window, a fly or a bee will come in, uninvited. Their buzz will distract me, and I may silently, or even verbally, tell them to be gone. Sometimes they actually obey. Sometimes, not.
In our fallen world, we encounter pests of many kinds, for things in creation are not as God made them to be. Including stalkers, which was a topic of conversation during my weekly video chat with two other writers. I shared about how once I had a mild experience of someone who disagreed with something I wrote (I think she took exception with my spelling of, “A Cuppa and a Slice of Pye.”) She contacted me every which way she could for several weeks. I never felt in any danger, but rather likened the feeling to having a gnat near me. Annoying and distracting, yes, but not overwhelming. After a couple of weeks, she left.
What distractions or irritants face you today, as a buzzing fly? Can God give you the forbearance to endure them?
This post is part of the weekly Five Minute Friday link-up. You can find today’s prompt here.
I share more of my story of finding myself in this wild world of the United Kingdom in my book Finding Myself in Britain. You can find out more here.
I was thinking of this type of fly today as well! FMF14
I wonder how many others did as well!
I seriously considered writing about the insect, simply because I knew few if any others would do the same. Then when I set the timer, I changed my mind. I sure enjoyed your article, though. 🙂
Loved your poem! So interesting to me how God moves in his people so differently…
For me, the buzzy flies are the people who say I ought to give up and die, swoon back into Jesus’ arms.
It’s like, come ON, guys…I know it’s hard for you to watch me die by inches, but it’s WAY harder for me.
#2 at MF this week.

Wow – yes, they surely need to be swatted away. Live, we cry; live!
So love that you’re living in Great Brittain! I am drinking my Brittish tea and honey starter of the day right now! I’m a huge tea drinker…daily. I love that we both took the “fly” prompt with a actual living “fly” as the topic and tied it into our FMF post. I appreciate you commenting and visiting my blog. I had to visit back (obligatory) and grateful for that.
Cheers! I will be traveling to London (God Willing) next summer with our family to celebrate my 40th and enjoy a family vacation away. I’ll keep in mind the lack of screens on windows! I love that you have a book too! I’ve added it to my Amazon wish list. One book at a time. I’m reading a faith infused book by Crystal Stine right now: Holy Hustle. It’s really good if you are in need of a summer read.
Glad to have “met” you in the blogosphere.
Jenn
Jenn, thanks so much for popping over! I love that, God willing, you’ll be here to celebrate your 40th. Fab! Reminds me that I should put together a blog pos on my recommendations for traveling in London.
Thanks too for saying you have my book on your wishlist – fantastic! I have a whole chapter on tea!
Bless you.
Yep, I get buzzy people who bug me and annoy me more often than I’d like to admit. I’m working on forming the habit of seeing people through Jesus’ eyes, and not my own. It helps cut down on my annoyance. He loves us so very much, and he wants us to share that love with everyone else–even the bugs ;).
I love how you’re trying to reframe the ‘buggy’ people that way, asking God to help you see them as he sees them. I try that too, but so need the reminder!
Interesting take! You’re right, negative comments can stick around and we don’t know how to deal with them at times, hey?
Yes. They can go round and round in our head on a loop, those comments. Thank God for his help in stopping the cycle.
I like your analogy here! I have learned to reframe my view of buggy people in a way that is similar to Anita’s. I pray for God’s mercies to shape my lens. Sometimes, it takes lots of prayer!
Prayer helps so much, doesn’t it. Thanks for popping over!
